The History of the Apron Empty
PostSubject: The History of the Apron   The History of the Apron Icon_minitimeSat Sep 06, 2008 1:00 pm

I saw this and thought it was kindof cute- I'm pretty sure my granddaughters have no idea what an apron is!

The History Of The Apron

I don’t think our kids know what an apron is.

The principal use of Grandma’s apron was to protect the dress underneath, but along with that, it served as a potholder for removing hot pans from the oven.

It was wonderful for drying children’s tears, and on occasion was even used for cleaning out dirty ears.

From the chicken coop, the apron was used for carrying eggs, fussy chicks, and sometimes half-hatched eggs to be finished in the warming oven.

When company came, those aprons were ideal hiding places for shy kids.

And when the weather was cold, grandma wrapped it around her arms.

Those big old aprons wiped many a perspiring brow, bent over the hot wood stove.

Chips and kindling wood were brought into the kitchen in that apron.

From the garden, it carried all sorts of vegetables. After the peas had been shelled, it carried out the hulls.

In the fall, the apron was used to bring in apples that had fallen from the trees.

When unexpected company drove up the road, it was surprising how much furniture that old apron could dust in a matter of seconds.

When dinner was ready, Grandma walked out onto the porch, waved her apron, and the men knew it was time to come in from the fields to dinner.

It will be a long time before someone invents something that will replace that ‘old-time apron’ that served so many purposes.

REMEMBER:

Grandma used to set her hot baked apple pies on the window sill to cool.
Her granddaughters set theirs on the window sill to thaw.

They would go crazy now trying to figure out how many germs was on that apron.

I don’t think I ever caught anything from an apron.

I remember making one in school in home ec. It does seem that aprons have become a thing of the past now. It's kinda sad really.

I do have an apron but don't use it like I used to. My daughter in law has started baking more and I'm going to make an apron for her plus one or the granddaughters to use when they bake.

Yep I do some sewing - - hmm what do I sew? Well all the grandkids have a quilt I made them when they were each born. . . . the granddaughters get sundresses- made matching ones for them too- they get short outfits, pants and tops, jumpers, skirts and I made some satin like Easter dresses for them one year. The grandsons get shorts, pants and tops. I made a satiny cape for one granddaughter who likes dress up and some other capes and skirts for dressup. We have 2 granddaughters who just love anything princess so am going to make them their own princess dresses for Christmas with matching capes then get shoes, wands and of course tiarias to complete the outfits. Once in awhile I make myself something too - did a skort this year and shorts. I took sewing in high school- yep all those years ago- and sewed for 4H. I can do most things but not jeans- can't get the zipper right but used to be able to do it - just haven't in long time. lol
